The classic fairy tale takes a terrifying turn as Sophia Lillis stars in Gretel & Hansel, a dark horror reimagining of the Brothers Grimm story from director Oz Perkins.
Forget the sweet gingerbread house and the charming bedtime stories. This version of Hansel and Gretel is anything but comforting.
Orion Pictures unveiled the first teaser trailer for Gretel & Hansel on September 4, 2019, introducing audiences to a disturbing interpretation of the beloved fairy tale.
Directed by Osgood “Oz” Perkins, the filmmaker behind The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, the movie brings an unsettling atmosphere to a story many people grew up hearing.
Starring Sophia Lillis, Sammy Leakey, and Alice Krige, Gretel & Hansel promises a journey into the woods where childhood innocence meets something truly sinister.
Gretel & Hansel Trailer Gives a Classic Fairy Tale a Terrifying Makeover
The trailer introduces Gretel and Hansel, two siblings struggling to survive in a distant countryside.
With little food and nowhere else to turn, the children venture into a mysterious forest in search of work and shelter.
But the deeper they travel, the more dangerous their surroundings become.
Their journey eventually leads them to an isolated house belonging to Holda, an elderly woman who initially appears willing to help.
For two hungry children, the promise of food and warmth seems like a blessing.
However, Gretel quickly begins sensing that something is terribly wrong.
The trailer builds its tension through disturbing imagery, strange encounters, and an atmosphere that makes even the quietest moments feel threatening.
Sophia Lillis Takes the Lead as Gretel
Sophia Lillis, recognized for her performance as Beverly Marsh in It and It Chapter Two, takes on the leading role of Gretel.
Unlike traditional versions of the fairy tale, this adaptation places greater emphasis on the older sister’s perspective.
Gretel is responsible for protecting her younger brother, even as she struggles to understand the dangers surrounding them.
As the siblings become increasingly vulnerable, she must rely on her instincts and determination to keep them safe.
Lillis brings an intense, emotionally grounded presence to the character, making Gretel’s growing suspicion an important part of the movie’s suspense.
Alice Krige Plays the Mysterious Witch Holda
Every frightening fairy tale needs a memorable villain, and Gretel & Hansel introduces Alice Krige as Holda.
The mysterious woman lives deep within the forest, where her isolated home offers food and shelter to the wandering siblings.
But beneath her seemingly generous behavior lies something far more disturbing.
The trailer includes unsettling moments that hint at Holda’s true nature, including eerie physical transformations and disturbing rituals.
Krige, known for her performances in Silent Hill and Star Trek: First Contact, brings a commanding presence to the role.
Her character becomes central to the film’s atmosphere of suspicion and supernatural dread.
Meet the Cast of Gretel & Hansel
Joining Sophia Lillis and Alice Krige is Sammy Leakey, who portrays Gretel’s younger brother Hansel.
While Gretel approaches their new surroundings with suspicion, Hansel is more easily attracted by the warmth and food offered inside Holda’s home.
This difference creates tension between the siblings as they attempt to understand their situation.
The cast also features Jessica De Gouw as a younger version of Holda and Charles Babalola as a mysterious hunter who crosses paths with the children.
Together, the small ensemble contributes to a story focused on isolation, vulnerability, and the dangers hidden within unfamiliar surroundings.
Director Oz Perkins Brings Psychological Horror to the Fairy Tale
Rather than transforming the Brothers Grimm story into a fast-paced action adventure, Oz Perkins takes a more atmospheric approach.
Known for his slow-building suspense and haunting imagery, the filmmaker emphasizes the emotional and psychological experiences of his characters.
The forest becomes more than a setting. Its twisting trees, thick shadows, and eerie silence create a feeling that the siblings are being watched.
The movie’s unusual compositions and restrained visual style help turn familiar fairy-tale elements into disturbing images.
Instead of relying entirely on sudden scares, Gretel & Hansel builds fear through uncertainty and the growing realization that danger may be hiding in plain sight.
A Darker Interpretation of the Brothers Grimm Story
The original Hansel and Gretel fairy tale follows two children who become lost in the forest and encounter a witch living inside a house made of sweets.
Over the years, the story has been adapted into animated adventures, family films, and action-packed fantasy movies.
However, the original tale already contains frightening themes, including abandonment, hunger, deception, and survival.
Gretel & Hansel returns to these darker elements while exploring Gretel’s experiences in greater depth.
The adaptation also changes the order of the siblings’ names, emphasizing Gretel’s central role in the story.
This creative decision establishes the movie as a different interpretation rather than a straightforward retelling.
Why the Gretel & Hansel Trailer Is So Unsettling
One of the trailer’s most effective qualities is its use of atmosphere.
Instead of revealing every danger immediately, the preview allows audiences to imagine what might be hiding inside Holda’s home.
The strange surroundings, unsettling sounds, and carefully framed images create an atmosphere of dread.
Even ordinary objects become frightening when placed in an unfamiliar context.
The result is a trailer that suggests horror can emerge from the simplest situations, especially when the characters are isolated and unsure whom to trust.
For audiences who enjoy psychological horror and dark fantasy, the film offers a disturbing take on a familiar childhood story.
