Disney’s Moana remains one of the studio’s most inspiring stories because of its remarkable
heroine. Moana is courageous, compassionate, determined, and independent while embracing her
femininity. Her beauty is presented authentically rather than being defined by conventional
standards, making her a refreshing and empowering protagonist. The live-action adaptation
successfully preserves these qualities, with Catherine Laga’aia delivering a performance that
captures Moana’s warmth, strength, humor, and resilience. Her vocal talent and natural screen
presence make her a fitting choice for the role.
Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui, bringing back the character’s signature humor and
charisma. While his performance has entertaining moments, it occasionally feels awkward, as
some of Maui’s exaggerated personality is more effective in animation than in live action. Even
so, the chemistry between Johnson and Laga’aia keeps their partnership engaging. The film also
retains the charm of Moana’s animal companions, whose comedic moments provide welcome
comic relief, while the breathtaking island landscapes and ocean visuals add to the film’s vibrant
atmosphere.
Although the live-action adaptation does not fully recapture the magic and emotional depth of
the animated original, it remains a fun and heartfelt retelling. By staying true to the story’s
themes of courage, self-discovery, and cultural heritage, the film honors the spirit of the original
while offering a fresh interpretation for a new generation. It may not surpass its animated
predecessor, but it is an enjoyable adaptation with enough heart and adventure to make it worth
watching.
