You might be one of the people confused about seeing the gigantic billboards of an anime girl dressed all black along the Edsa or C5. You might have seen a few clips of it on Instagram too and wonder, what is this? What even is Trese?

Trese, is perhaps one of the most hyped anime currently streaming out on Netflix, and for good reasons. It is the first animated adaption of an award-winning comic from the same title. Created by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldissimo, Trese was first released in December 2005 and has been getting traction from comic lovers ever since.

The animated series has been getting a lot of attention recently especially after it announced Liza Soberano as the voice of its main protagonist. It also features the music from the Kiner Brothers responsible for the soundtracks of Narcos, Star Wars, Doom Patrol, and many more. Lastly, it is directed by Jay Oliva, the guy behind The Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme, and many more.

So what is Trese about?

Trese is about a woman named Alexandra Trese, a Babaylan-Mandirigma or a Healer Shaman Warrior. She serves as the bridge and the protector of our world from the unknown. The Philippine archipelago has changed drastically over the years especially Manila and the magics that were once part of everyday life have been slowly forgotten. As the environment changed, so does its residents. From a group of Aswangs forming a gang group to the Nuno who now lives under the sewers. Alexandra is the one people call for help in dealing with these situations. Trese re-imagines the world where we co-exist with the beings that we only heard from stories. Alexandra solves mysteries that cannot be explained by the norms.
